Tatebayashi City : Home to the World's Best Azalea and Bunbuku Chagama (legendary Iron teapot) Tatebayashi is located in the south eastern part of Gunma Prefecture, near the center of the Kanto Region. If you can imagine the shape of Gunma as a “flying crane” as it is often called, Tatebayashi is located at the head of the crane. Located in the surrounding area are, Sano City in Tochigi-ken to the north (across Watarase River), Itakura-machi of Gunma in the east, Meiwa-machi in the south and Oura-machi and Chiyoda-machi in the west. Tatebayashi is far from the prefectural capital Maebashi (50km), the farthest among the major cities in Gunma. On the other hand, it has the advantage of being the closest to Tokyo, only 70km away from Asakusa. It also enjoys convenient rail and road network connections. Tatebayashi is located at the border of Gunma Prefecture, and so enjoys a close relationship with nearby cities such as Ota, Ashikaga and Sano (both Tochigi), Koga (Ibaraki), Hanyu, Kazo, Gyoda and Kumagaya (all Saitama) each within a radius of 20km of Tatebayashi.
